Āta whakaaro helps to understand the strengths and needs of ākonga within their education contexts. Āta whakaaro will support teams to identify areas to plan for change. This may be at a whole school or cluster level through to a more individualised level.

Āta whākaaro encourages teams to shift the focus from solely identifying ‘deficits’ or 'problems' that rest within ākonga. Instead, āta whakaaro is about understanding the connections between learning environments, learning relationships, curriculum demands and ākonga characteristics and the impact this has on learning and wellbeing.
